Emmi Whitehorse, “Inside the White Cube”
This past Fall, Emmi Whitehorse was featured for a solo exhibition at White Cube, Paris, as part of their “Inside the White Cube” presentations featuring guest artists to the gallery. It was a survey show of thirteen paintings ranging from 1986 through 2025 on view in an architecturally significant space with multiple intimate rooms. With just two paintings per room, it allowed the viewer to focus individually on each piece, which is rarely possible in larger more cavernous spaces. I have been working with Emmi Whitehorse over the past 25 years, since we first met at LewAllen Contemporary in 2000, and now function as her Studio Director. It was an incredible experience for Emmi and I, working with White Cube putting together the exhibition and casting light on all the different periods of Emmi’s career. We both enjoyed walking down memory lane, choosing pieces from her private collection to feature, telling the story of the artwork over the decades. When the curators at White Cube came across Emmi’s work at Stranieri Ovunque’s “Foreigners Everywhere,” group exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia, Venice, Italy, in early 2024, the idea was planted in their heads to present Whitehorse’s unique inspired vision of abstract landscape painting. Garth Greenan Gallery in NY, helped make it all possible because of their close relationship with White Cube and the idea became a reality. Emmi and I traveled to Paris this past Fall to see it all come together and were so pleased with the results. We thank all the people at White Cube who rolled up their sleeves and dug into Whitehorse’s practice, understanding the intricacies of the artwork and the artist, producing an incredible exhibition with thoughtful writing and media.
Here are a few of my photos to give you a feel of the show, and a link to White Cube for further investigation.
