John Fincher

John Fincher spent most of his adult life, living and painting in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was well known regionally, and beloved by his many followers for his intense large-scale landscapes – trees exploding upward and outward in bursts of color, and his beautifully composed collages, still lives, and in the later years botanical paintings. He was a fixture at three renowned Santa Fe galleries, starting in 1978 at Elaine Horwitch Gallery, then 1995-2002 at LewAllen Contemporary, Gerald Peters Gallery from 2003-2009, and back to LewAllen Galleries from 2010 until his passing in 2024.

Fincher’s largest body of work can best be described as contemporary landscape painting. His handling of color and gesture leaned towards abstraction, as he vividly rendered and interpreted dynamic geography and forces of nature.

I was fortunate to call Fincher a friend and enjoyed every minute of presenting his work at LewAllen Contemporary some 25 years ago, and treasured any excuse to do a studio visit and walk into Fincher’s “world.”
